It's National Cat Health Month!

February is National Cat Health Month and everyone at Basepaws is super excited because improving feline health is what we get out of bed for every day. Well, that and coffee, but you get what we’re saying.

Recognizing the early signs of an illness can be the difference between a healthy, happy cay and a kitty who feels less than pawfect. Early veterinary intervention helps identify and treat your cat and can be a literal lifesaver. When you have all the information, some of the more prevalent genetic diseases are very treatable.

Over the course of the month, we will highlight the 17 genetic diseases our cat DNA Kit tests in order to give you a better idea of the benefits of genetic testing. We’ll also give you tips and ideas for ways to make your tabby’s life happy, healthy, and maybe even longer.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Litter-ally make a commitment to clean the cat box daily. Your home will smell fresher and be more hygienic (always a good thing) and you will reduce the chances of infectious diseases transmitted through feces and urine. Put it in perspective: you probably flush every time you go, so shouldn’t your beloved cat get the same courtesy?
  2. Make an appointment for a check-up with your vet. Everyone needs an annual physical, including your pampered prince or princess, so use February as the month you do just that. See they are at the optimal weight, need their teeth cleaned, and if there is anything else going on. An ounce of prevention is well worth it.
  3. Take a spa day! The thought of getting your cat groomed may be akin to, well...herding cats, but the benefits far outweigh the momentary annoyance of getting them in their carrier. Make sure it a pet salon that takes cats - there would be nothing scarier for Fluffy than being the only cat at the dog groomer!

Finally, we encourage you to test their DNA today for a healthier tomorrow. Your cat’s health - and every cat’s health - is why we do what we do. Click here to see how Basepaws Cat Kit works. And here’s to a totally pawsome National Cat Health Month!
